Simple things mean a lot
It might seem like everyone around you is getting sick at the moment and that’s because winter bugs are very common during this time of year.
From coughs, colds and upset stomachs - these easily become contagious as we spend more time hanging out with friends and family indoors and sometimes forget to do the 3 simple things that can help keep ourselves and others well.
How to keep yourself and others well
Wash your hands often
Use soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, or an antibacterial gel if you don’t have access to soap and water. This is particularly important
after you’ve been out and about
after coughing and sneezing
before you eat
after you've been to the toilet
after touching pets.
Avoid touching your face
As germs can enter through your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
Use a tissue or the crook of your elbow when you cough or sneeze and dispose of tissues properly.
How the simple things help keep yourself and others well
Think of how many public places you visit and how many things you touch each day before you then pick up your phone and other belongings like a gaming controller or earpods and then go on to touch your face or eat your dinner.
These everyday habits and belongings could all lead to the spread of germs and winter bugs.
Common winter illnesses include:
The cold or flu
Coughs that can turn into to chest infections
Norovirus which includes vomiting and diarrhoea.
What to do if you become unwell
No one likes being unwell – especially when you’ve got something fun planned or college assignments coming up. But the best way to feel better is to take it easy and stay home if you’re sick.
This not only gives your body a chance to rest and recover but you also avoid making someone else ill.
Here are some more simple things that can help keep you from catching winter bugs
Whether you still live at home with a parent or guardian, alone or with friends, doing these simple things can help yourself and others keep well this winter:
Keep surfaces clean and try to remember to wipe down your phone and laptop every now and again.
Stay warm and well-rested to help your immune system fight off infections.
Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and fluids.
If you can, stay home if you’re sick to prevent spreading it to others.
When possible, try to avoid close contact with anyone showing flu-like symptoms.
Get the flu vaccine if you’re eligible by speaking to your GP.
